TREATMENT
The type of treatment depends on which type of meningitis you or your child has. Bacterial Meningitis: Bacterial meningitis is a life threatening bacterial infection that requires immediate treatment with antibiotics and more recently, cortisone medications, to ensure recovery and decrease any chances of complications such as brain swelling and seizures. The series of antibiotics prescribed by your doctor depends on the type of bacteria that is causing you meningitis. Your doctor will provide series of antibiotics to detect the exact bacteria causing the infection. Infected sinuses or mastoids (the bones behind the outer ear that connect to the middle ear) may need to be drained. Viral Meningitis: Antibiotics cannot cure viral meningitis. Usually the disease improves on its own within a couple of weeks. Some treatments of viral meningitis include bed rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medication that helps with fevers, rashes, headaches, and neck pains. If the disease is caused by herpes, there is an available antiviral medication. Specialists
