INTRODUCTION
Meningitis is the inflammation of the meninges (tissues covering the brain and
spinal cord). Meningitis can be caused by a virus, bacteria, or fungus. The most common type
of meningitis is Neisseria (viral) meningitis and Meningococcal (bacterial) meningitis. Bacterial meningitis is preventable, but if not treated within three or more days, death is inevitable for the patient. According to the CDC, 2,600 people per year in the United Sates get infected with bacterial meningitis, and about 15% of them die. This is very tragic because bacterial meningitis can be easily prevented by simple actions such as washing your hands after using the toilet, or getting a quick vaccination from a local drug store. We need to stop letting innocent people die and spread awareness of this easily avoidable disease. Adolescents, young adults, and parents all need to be informed by this deadly infection, and how it can affect them and their family. It is crucial for them to understand the prevention of an outbreak. Awareness of this infection can not only save lives, but improve the lifestyles of families that can prevent other diseases from occurring.
